Gender Equality in the Qur'an: A Comparative Analysis Interpretations of Amina Wadud and Nasaruddin Umar

This article examines the concept of gender equality in the Qur'an through a comparative analysis of the interpretation of Q.S. an-Nisā' [4]:34 from the perspectives of Amina Wadud and Nasaruddin Umar. This verse is often used as a theological basis to legitimize male leadership over women, both in the domestic and public spheres, giving rise to a patriarchal understanding. This study uses a qualitative approach with a library research method, analyzed through thematic and comparative interpretation methods. The results of the study show that Amina Wadud interprets the concept of qiwāmah functionally and contextually through a feminist hermeneutic approach, so that leadership is not understood as the natural superiority of men, but as a social responsibility that can change according to capacity. Meanwhile, Nasaruddin Umar interprets the verse using a thematic, linguistic, and socio-historical approach, emphasizing that male leadership is a trust, not a permanent privilege. Despite differences in the level of deconstruction, both figures agree that Q.S. an-Nisā' [4]:34 cannot be used to legitimize gender discrimination and must be read in line with the principles of justice and equality in Islam. This study emphasizes the importance of re-reading gender verses so that the Qur'an remains relevant in responding to the challenges of social justice in the contemporary era.
